Lunch in Provence, France, represents a way of life. It is a critical part of what makes the French the way that they are.
The rituals of lunch, and the deeply engrained traditions of lunch serve as a metaphor to help understand the mystical appeal of Provence.
To live in Provence, it helps to first understand the nature of France and the French.
This adventure, by an Irish born American, and his Canadian wife, and the observations and sometimes humorous tales recounted here-in, try to pass on some of that understanding, perhaps to encourage others to live the dream themselves.

I love reading books about food, including France's food culture. And so I was sorely disappointed by this (self-published) book. The writing never really captures the essence of the food; the focus was instead on the number of courses, "freebies," and price. What was brought home was the centrality of lunch to French life. A map would've been useful to refer to, and would be a service to folks driving through Provence and wanting to check out some of the restaurants that were described. There are also assorted vignettes about purchasing and retro-fitting a retirement home, and the empathic reader can well imagine the cultural challenges involved. However, in some vignettes, Craig comes across as well-intended but naive. His description of his (likely gay) decorator is a good example.

The big problem: The writing and grammar were so poor as to distract me the whole way through. The writing is earnest but just isn't good. It's juvenile. And the grammar, particularly the use of commas, is atrocious. Commas are sprinkled everywhere, and sometimes in the oddest places: This, comma problem, was so distracting, to me, that I often had to re-read sentences, to get the gist. The very large type set was also annoying. Makes the book thicker but takes away from the read. And sometimes the vocabulary is overwrought -- "plethora" and "cacophony" in one sentence is just too much.

I want to be clear that my critique has nothing to do with this book being self-published. I have given self-published books 5-star reviews. It is the quality that led to the poor review. I have no doubt that Craig enjoyed writing this book and getting it out there. He is clearly passionate about the story he has to tell. That got him his second star. But it doesn't compare to other books about either French food culture or living in Provence.

Update: I'm in the midst of reading "How to Cook Bouillabaisse in 37 Easy Steps" and it's a delightful read about Paris and Provence, details about food and food culture, and even recipes. Loving it.

An enjoyable Culinary Tour of France, and a fun read for those of us Francophiles, who adore France and their amazing cuisine.
Loved this book - could not put it down. A better title could not be found but what a surprise.

If you have ever been to the French countryside or it is on your bucket list, this is the book for you. This brought back so many memories of how everything stops for possibly the most important time of the day – lunch. How an ancient culture maintains some of its best traditions and still displays some of its craziest idiosyncrasies.

We should all live like this, eat like this, entertain like this and enjoy life. I’m taking my wife out tonight (in Montreal) to a place I know can satisfy this re-discovered craving for everything French.

Buy the book and then the airline tickets.
I loved this book, primarily because I had been to this region in Provence recently and enjoyed reminiscing. The author and his wife obviously have money but living vicariously on their access to the night life isn't painful.
Recipe for a great vacation 1) buy those weakened Euros 2) travel to Provence 3) stay at Le Mas 7 bed and breakfast in St. Andiol 4) meander through the wondrously remote Ardeche 3) drink Rose, repeat 3) live vicariously through Tony Craig's witty and personal account of a year (plus) in Provence; 4) Plan next year's trip.

It really is, All About Lunch.
An informative and entertaining glimpse of life in the Luberon area of France, this book is a must-read for travelers and house hunters alike. The author's extensive knowledge of laws concerning taxation and house renovations in France is invaluable. Anthony Craig imparts this information through charming vignettes which display affection and respect for French culture. Dealings with workmen, decorators, notaries, etc. are described with humour. The author uses the theme of lunch to showcase the wonderful cuisine and wines of the area. This theme is woven through the vignettes as Craig and his wife embrace the French lifestyle. "It's All About Lunch" is a "Moveable Feast" for all.
An engaging and charming collection of vignettes about finding a home, making a life and enjoying lunch in Provence. Tony tells the stories with enthusiasm and wry humor. His guidance on great lunch experiences provides a clever thread throughout the book. And his observations on the peculiarities of French people and culture stand out. From the tradesmen to the postal workers and the multilayered police force, they convey a sense of being there ... Having undertaken a similar adventure in Tuscany over the past decade, I'm inspired to see Provence and "do lunch" there soon!
